What is a Nagar Kirtan?
A Nagar Kirtan is a Sikh religious procession that involves singing hymns (kirtan) through the streets of a community or city / town. The term "Nagar" means "town" or "city," and "Kirtan" refers to the devotional singing of Sikh scriptures, especially from the Guru Granth Sahib.
It’s both a spiritual and social event, aimed at spreading Sikh teachings and promoting unity and community spirit. Along the route, Langar stalls offer free food, snacks, and drinks to everyone for all backgrounds and faiths — Sikh or not
The Nagar Kirtan isn’t just a religious event — it’s also a chance to share Sikh values like:
- Unity
- Equality
- Seva (selfless service)
- Community strength
- Hospitality
